An Prediction Market User Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on recently would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
